Exponential growth of technology?
Will technology solve all our problems? No! Of course not… we have to reset and review also our current economic systems, our means of consumption, distribution etc. But technology will be an important driver of change and possibilities. It will also fuel many ethical questions.
Technology is being disruptive for many industries and companies. It seams that technology is going to solve all our problems. Many people think this is going to happen. But I think it is a very dangerous way of thinking. Of course technology can ( and will) help us forward but the biggest challenge is to use technology from a different perspective. We have become addicted to purely economic growth and consumption. But we have to make a step forward in human development to learn to live within the limits of our planet. It is not about getting bigger, faster, better and more. It is about being more human and learn to live with limits. That’s real progress. This counters the way many people think that it is all about economics. So when we talk about exponential growth of technology we see a lot of opportunities. We see the merge of humans with technology, a wide range of new possibilities in healthcare and security. But we see also the rise of ethical questions about privacy, communication and consumption. Technology can create a total new world. A circular pre time world where we seek balance between our way of living and our planet.
Capitalism has reached it’s end and has to go into a new phase of development. A shift from me-thinking towards we-acting. Technology can serve two worlds. The one dominated by profit, pure economic growth and endlessly consumerism or a world where we seek more balance and live within our natural boundaries using new technologies. I hope the last one will win. Technological change is exponential but our biggest challenge is to use technology in favor of a fundamental new era. A people centered era!
