Library without books
The video store has disappeared from the malls. Bookshops sell less and less books, and the magazin-business isn’t doing so well either. It’s no suprise to see a library opening last week in Texas, without books..
My children go every month with their classes to the library, situated just around the corner of the school. But since this schoolyear they mainly work on tablets. Writing, reading, spelling and arithmetics, for every course they use their tablets. I wonder if they know the concept of a library by the time they are in highschool. Because last week in America Biblio Tech opened a library, without books. You can find only eReaders and eBooks there.
If the library will disappear, just like the video store remains to be seen. In any case, the function it has today, lending books and DVD’s, will not be the only function a library has in the future. Maybe it turns into a place of knowledge, or a place where you can pick up to read ebooks. I expect that books, just like healthcare, videos and music, will come to the peple, instead of the other way around. The need for people to meet each other remains. A library without books, but a gathering place for book lovers, is one example. The Biblio Tech is such a place. Besides a place to reed a book it will be also a place for education, or a place to read to neighbourhood children. The library of the future isn’t a books paradise, but a knowledge hub.
