Trend: Sharing economy

It's not what you own but how smart you are not to own stuff. This is the new status symbol of the sharing economy.

We derive our status and ego to what we own. This model, and washout of capitalism does not seem tenable. Especially as we strive for a world where everyone has equal rights and access to stuff. This goal within a planet with scarce resources is impossible. The sharing economy is not based on possession but on access. The human environment contains enough for everyone. Especially in the Western world there is an abundance of things we possess. Our Western society thought that progress was only possible by owning more stuff. Now we see a fundamental change in this model. We see that access becomes a business model. A model which could in the long term even be more sustainable for our planet. But then we have to fundamentally change to business models behind the principle of sharing. Many of todays sharing economy examples are just old models of growth but with the hype of so called sharing.

Definition: An economic model where access is the starting-point instead of ownership. The sharing economy is also known as collaborative consumption. The sharing economy focusses on redistribution, sharing and reuse of excess capacity in goods and services.

Behoefte
