3d printed pills

pills for epileptics from printer

The FDA approved the first 3D printed drug. The drug is called Spritam and comes from an American pharmaceutical company Aprecia. The ingredients of the 3d printed pills are laid down one layer at a time. The effect of this way of production is that the pills become porous and potent enabling ingredients to activate  quickly. The tablets can disintegrate in less than 10 seconds. This is very important for treating epileptics. Aprecia’s 3D printed pills are also capable of containing high doses. Will this be the start of large ammount of 3d printed pills or a future or 3d printed pills. No, not yet. But a small start is here but there is a long way to go.
