Vertical forest in Milan

How to create nature in a densely populated area? The solution the government of the Italian city Milan came up with: a vertical forest, in the centre of the city.

We’ve seen it before, vertical landscaping. At various places in the world vertical farming is used to solve the problem of little space. The Italian city of Milan came up with a similar solution for a space problem. At the end of 2013 Bosso Vertical has risen. For those who don’t speak Italian, it’s a vertical forest. The architect Stefano Boeri wanted to contribute to the health of Milanisti by transforming the CO2 from the big city into clean air. Also he wanted to do something about the natural diversity of his city. He could have designed a park, or a large water facility, but he came up with something far more unusual: a forest. A vertical forest.

According to the plans of the architect, the forest can naturally be used for walking around on the different platforms. The forest consists of more than 900 trees per platform (Boeri wants to build several), which totals the forest at 10,000 m2. Quite a nice number of green for a big city.
I expect that the cities of the future all will have vertical ‘green’ constructions. Not only forests or agricultural lands, but also, for containing sportfields. Not only because space is rare, but also because of the beautiful view. The sky is indeed the limit.
