The economics of happiness
This era of transition makes one thing totally clear: we have to do things differently. Education, production, politics, economy, environment and many more have to be reset and redesigned. It seems that every aspect of today’s society needs a reshape and redefinition.
The past has brought us great things but we also have created a society and a way of living which isn’t sustainable for future generations. Now is the time to be a rebel and try to do things differently. Earth needs rebels.
The economics of happiness is a movie from Helena Norberg-Hodge, Steven Gorelick and John Page. The movie is about all the challenges humanity stands for.
We quote from the website The Economics of Happiness.
Economic globalization has led to a massive expansion in the scale and power of big business and banking. It has also worsened nearly every problem we face: fundamentalism and ethnic conflict; climate chaos and species extinction; financial instability and unemployment. There are personal costs too. For the majority of people on the planet life is becoming increasingly stressful. We have less time for friends and family and we face mounting pressures at work.
The Economics of Happiness describes a world moving simultaneously in two opposing directions. On the one hand, government and big business continue to promote globalization and the consolidation of corporate power. At the same time, all around the world people are resisting those policies, demanding a re-regulation of trade and finance—and, far from the old institutions of power, they’re starting to forge a very different future. Communities are coming together to re-build more human scale, ecological economies based on a new paradigm – an economics of localization.
There is no time for small incremental change and there is no way back. It is time for radical and groundbreaking change. We have to break up with the world and way of living we are addicted to. This doesn’t mean that we have to trough away what we have. No, we have to build systems which make our current and dominant systems obsolete. In the movie The economics of happiness the vision of the rise of the local economy dominates. This is of course a trend and a counter development against the negative side effect of globalization. But going back to local isnt the holy grail and it isn’t what the movies claims to be. The movie inspires you to make a difference and challenge the status quo.
