Tesla, we see them more often. In the media we are bombarded with it, and many trend watchers mention it in their lectures. But is the Tesla really that innovative?
The future of transport and transportation is not creating a better and more efficient car but a totally new mobility system. That is what is really asked by the rapidly changing environment and cities in which we live. We throw ourselves massively on the electrical and autonomous car. It is amazing how we pull this off, but is this really the future of transportation? We are doubting more often. Electric driving is becoming the new normal, but the concept car still remains traditional. New transport has still many concepts of our traditional car that only gets improved by contemporary technologies. It seems that we are not capable of letting go of our existing world and to launch completely new mobility concept that makes our contemporary car redundant. The Swedish start-up Unity wants to change that. Unity aims to change the electric car as we know it radically.
Contemporary cars have some additional features:
Current vehicles are overweight, overpowered, oversized, and under-occupied, and which spend more time parked than being used.
We also notice that organizations try to reinvent the electric car. Consider the Bolt and Tesla 3. But there are many more examples of traditional car brands. And again the questions is how innovative and radical those changes are? According to the Swedish start-up Unity the renovation is still too limited. At least if we listen to Unity’s statement: the most deliberate reinvention of the automobile in modern times.
The car still has many similarities with the contemporary car. But the inside is different. It uses a large augmented reality screen and the steering wheel looks more like a game console controller. Man claimed that the ultimate Unity will primarily contain biological materials. It is still a bit vague what that exactly means. The question is whether this is a total reinvention of our contemporary cars and mobilities. I believe that we are capable for further development. Fact is: we are challenging our modern definition of mobility more and more. And that is the start we have to take to contribute to a sustainable future. Answering the question of how innovative Tesla really is? Well, we believe that it can be a lot more innovative. But that is easier said than done.
