Henry Jenkins about the transition within the media landscape

Henry Jenkins well know professor at MIT and author of then book The Convergence Culture (Where Old and New Media Collide). In five minutes he gives his vision on the new media landscape. The transition has begun.

It is said for many years: the world is changing faster then we think or even see. An example of the fast changing world is the world of media and communication. But the signals become every day even more clear: traditional media has had their years of success, now it is time for new media. Let put it different: traditional media is over. And the rise of new media brings a whole new world where different powers arise. This will impact the lives of everyone. This is one aspect of the transition in which we re now.

Henry Jenkins has the same message.

We are definitely in a moment of transition were an old media system is dying and a new media system is being born.

It is the transition form a society where a few large companies and institutions were in power to a society where every individual has a voice which can be heard. I totally agree with this vision. The organisation of tomorrow must learn to be out-of-control and must be able to influence the people who speak for them. Consumers are more and more 'in control'.

Jenkins make a great comparison with the history of humans. Before we had mass communication the stories belonged to the people. The people told the stories and made them. With the rise of mass communication those stories were more and more told by those who had the money and power to tell stories to the people. This changed the powers in the world. Now new media brings the power back to the people. A great campaign is the one of President Obama.
